About
Warangal was the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty, and the stonework they left is the reason to come. The fort survives mainly as its gateways — four free-standing ornamental toranas that have become the emblem of Telangana — along with fragments of the temple that once stood at the centre. The Thousand Pillar Temple in Hanamkonda, with its carved pillars and polished basalt, is from the same period. Outside the city at Palampet stands the Ramappa Temple, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2021 and notable for the quality of its bracket figures and its unusually light roofing stone.

Ramappa is some way outside the city and is usually underestimated in planning — it deserves its own half day rather than a stop squeezed onto the end of one.
The fort is best seen early, before the heat and before the light flattens the carving.
